Sacred deer and Great Torii Gate: Itsukushima, Japan

Behind me you can see the gate that people would sail in and one of the sacred #deer below. You’re not allowed to feed the deer food and they will try to steal it and they will try to steal your souvenirs or eat them.

And they are wild deer though. They are not domesticated. And behind me you can still see the gate. This island was considered so sacred you weren’t allowed to step foot on it. But you could sail in through that gate and then walk on planks and like a boardwalk. So you didn’t touch the sacred ground with your feet. During low tide you can walk out to this gate. And during normal and high tides it is in the water. It’s been here, a gate in one form or another, since the 1100s. There are a couple rules here. You’re not allowed to give birth, you’re not allowed to die, and you’re not allowed to be buried here. #Torii #Itsukushima #Japan
